Was wondering if anyone who has "been there" has some suggestions as to encouraging their freshman who has had a pretty poor first semester grade-wise? My son is very frustrated!

I'd recommend a few articles, from GT's parent newsletter. Both were infomative and provided direction on where to seek assistance on campus...good luck!

dear scmom,
is your freshman used to getting all As? my son is a senior (i think) and he still expresses frustration. the work is very challenging and i think most kids are surprised by the effort it takes.

i think sometimes they just want us to be there to listen...which i find very hard to do since by nature i want to fix everything. i have learned to bite my tongue (even though i have tons of advice) and ask if there is anything i can do to help.

Thanks for the help....I have read the articles, too. cherrmann-Yes to being used to all A's! And your advice is well taken! Guess the bottom line is he needs to learn to deal with the work, the time management and the stress-welcome to the real world! Merry Christmas---they will be home soon if not already!!

In my personal opinion, you should talk heart to heart with your son. Always calm down and never shout at him (If you do). I believe your son is adjusting because he is now in higher grade. Just help him to focus on studying while enjoying. Give him confidence through your words of wisdom. I hope it helps!  :)
